Fire safety in high-rise and mid-rise residential buildings has received significant attention since the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017. Here’s what you need to know for East Village.

Stay put vs evacuate

East Village buildings use a “stay put” policy for most fires. This means:

  • If the fire is not in your flat, keep your door closed and stay inside
  • The building’s fire compartmentation is designed to contain fires to individual flats
  • Call 999 — the fire brigade will direct you

When to evacuate:

  • If fire or smoke is in your flat
  • If the fire alarm sounds repeatedly (not just once)
  • If you receive direct instruction from the fire service or building management

Your flat’s fire safety

  • Keep your front door closed — fire doors are rated to hold back smoke and fire for up to 30 minutes
  • Don’t prop lobby or stairwell doors open
  • Know your nearest fire exit route (check the signage in your corridor)

Alarms

East Village flats have combined heat and smoke detectors. Do not tamper with them. If your alarm sounds persistently, call 999.

False alarms: Report to concierge. Do not assume an alarm is false — evacuate if you’re unsure.

EWS1 certificates

External Wall System (EWS1) certificates confirm a building’s cladding has been assessed. If you’re trying to sell or remortgage, your solicitor or lender may require one.

Contact GetLiving for information about your building’s EWS1 status.

Building specific information

Fire Warden

Some buildings have designated fire wardens. Check with your concierge.
